Background of the Study:
In recent years, political thuggery has emerged as a critical challenge undermining democratic norms, especially during local elections. In Ijebu Ode, the escalation of violence and coercive tactics during electoral processes has disrupted fair political competition and voter confidence (Olatunji, 2023). Scholars have noted that such practices not only compromise the integrity of local governance but also erode public trust in democratic institutions (Balogun, 2024). Historical patterns of political intimidation have evolved with modern technologies and organizational networks, intensifying their impact on grassroots democracy. Local stakeholders, including community leaders and civil society organizations, have voiced concerns over the detrimental effects of these actions on political inclusiveness and electoral fairness (Adebayo, 2023). The increasing frequency of politically motivated violence calls for an in-depth examination of its roots and repercussions, especially as it affects voter turnout and election credibility. Contemporary research highlights the interplay between political violence and structural vulnerabilities in the electoral system, urging policymakers to adopt effective countermeasures (Adeyemi, 2024). This study, therefore, explores the multifaceted dynamics of political thuggery in Ijebu Ode, aiming to contribute to the broader discourse on strengthening democratic practices at the local level.
Statement of the Problem:
Political thuggery in Ijebu Ode has led to a significant disruption in democratic processes by instilling fear and manipulating voter behavior. The recurrent episodes of violence have compromised electoral fairness and reduced public participation (Olawale, 2023). This study investigates how such practices hinder transparent and credible elections, thereby affecting local governance and undermining democratic consolidation. There is a pressing need to understand the extent and nuances of these practices to inform effective policy responses (Chukwu, 2024).
